I know Im a bit thick but you pull the leader and not the braid once you have done the up and back bit over the leader??? DOH. No wonder it kept fng up and breaking.

jb2020 - thanks HEAPS for that trick.
Just tried it, had the knot tied in less than 1/2 the time it usually takes me, not much longer than it takes for me to do an albright. I owe you a beer. |

Of course if you are worried about the forming of a figure 8 when tieing an overhand knot you could always revert to using an actual figure 8 knot
In lighter lines it works well.

no probs mate.
since changing to 3lb powerpro ive had some SBs pop on me when big fish hit hard and fast, despite always pulling the knot hard after tying to test its strength. i've since found the knot in the thread below which so far has been very good (its just a slight variation of the SB with a couple of half hitches at the end): http://www.breammaster.com/forum/showthread.php?t=57682 |

How do people rate the slimbeauty, when tying PE2 lines to 30-40lb leaders?

its not the best for passing through guides but it is significantly easier to tie compared to a GT/FG knot. |

Cool, yeah tying the GT/FG knot sure is not an easy knot to tie especially when out on the water. I'll give the slim beauty knot a go in the heavier line classes and see how it goes. Cheers.

Here is a "slim" beauty next to an FG - tied in 14lb fireline and 30lb mono.
As you can see - the guy who named the "Slim Beauty" was either taking the piss - or had never seen an FG |

I found that with the heavier braid. The braid side of the knot got quite thick once it doubled up as you can imagine.
That is when I tried the kaneit. Which to me is a lot easier to tie and just as strong. When using either of these knots with the heavier fluorocarbon leaders the softer leader the figure eight pulled up tighter (as to be expected) and the knot was a stronger. When using a harder leaders like the FC rock and Toray the figure eight doesn’t close up as tight when pulled tight. I have noticed this several times after getting snagged with the kaneit. With the FC rock the figure eight came loose and the braid knot came back still intact whereas with a softer leader like the new Shimano Ocea series the braid would break first. |

I guess you could always pull the figure of eight up tight with the aid of some pliers...That might help it to close up a bit more.
How do you all find the strength of the slim beauty? I really should learn how to tie the FG knot better but it just does my head in trying to tie it.

I've been a long time user of the slim beauty but with all the hype going around about the FG, I decided to give it a go and was mighty impressed. Being a relatively cumbersome knot to tie using the braid tied to the stripper guide method, I decided to spring fifty odd bucks for one of these
http://www.plat.co.jp/shop/catalog/p...ssist-2-0.html IMO it is worth every cent, making the FG easy to tie anywhere, even in a yak. The thing that impressed me most was the strength of the FG, heaps stronger than a slim beauty. Every time I've tested it the line has broken away from the knot.
