Assists tied with this https://www.ebay.com/p/VARIVAS-SS-As...451/1745670101

I use a hot air gun on the heat shrink and keep it at a fair distance, just close enough to get the job done.

I have tried hanging the trailing hook off a swivel and my diary shows I lose more fish than the assist set up. Haven't got a clue why that is.

Thanks for the link and tips.

Yeah maybe there is slightly more shock absorption in the assist cord - or being an extra couple of cms away from the lure decreases the impact of underwater head shakes or maybe the fish swallow it just a bit deeper and the hooks find better purchase. What ever it is - if it aint broke.....

I tie the assist dropper myself and the hooks are 4/0 mustad hoodlums. I use a pair of pliers to take the kirb out of the hook.

Since switching over to this instead of just 1 single my landing rate on salmon has more than doubled and still yet to be bitten off by a tailor.
I've done the same thing with Mustad Big Guns for lighter fishing although a bit hard to find in smaller sizes since Kmart stopped stocking them.

I think it may have something more to do with the weight a swivel adds to the trailing hook. Quite often the fish is hooked in the mouth on the short hook and the assist pins it under the jaw. That definitely didn't happen when I trialed a swivel, making me think maybe that hook was hanging too low. Who knows?

Yeah that makes more sense than what I came up with

More for the purpose of having something to tie off to that doesn't have all the sharp bits a split ring has. Aiding with any line twist problems is just a bonus.

Yeah I usually use lure clips/snaps so the line cutting wont be a huge issue but there are occasions where tying straight to the lure would be handy ie bightoffs from tailor or bust offs while casting and you want to get straight back into them with out rummaging around for a snap
