Redfin/Trout

OK guys it has been a long time that I have fished the dams like 20 years using baits back in those days. What is the go now relating to redfin and trout regards to best lures and locations come summer 2008.

Any comments would be great would like to hit the areas again with Reddog2 (SON) this summer as weekend camping as father and son team. And what dams can you use outboards and what dams only electric motors?

Yes have been dropping into locations over the last couple months while down that way on work commitment trips.

Many Thanks
Wes

Redfin

Hi,

Waroona Dam is a must, but you can fish it now, all year round for Redfin Perch.
Try 2inch Tsunami Holographic Swim Shad in 2inch. Any colour.
I fished there 2 weeks ago for an hour & half between 5-6.30pm for the first time. I got 2 nice size fish. I used the Golden Bunker W/Spots colour.
I was told by Paul Randall of Mandurah Tacklemart about these lures.
Go anytime in the morning or late in the day.
I fished from the shore, you dont need a boat.

Good luck.

waroona dam, lake navarino is closed until the first of september,it is stocked with brood stock from the hatchery at pemberton ,fish are around the 1kg mark most years, they dont fight as well as natural fish ,but are a easy target on fly and lure, great place to learn catching trout and for the more advanced angler to catch and release and warm up the skills for later on in the season ,some big red fin still haunt the dam, this time of the year harvey is worth a play, and drakesbrook weir
these dams are electic only waroona petrol motors permitted, waroona dam is fly and lure only, these fish are pretty easy to catch most lures and flys will work for the first couple of weeks ,i have been taking my boys up there for 10 years it has become a family event,we usally stay up there whole week end either in the caravan park or camped on the side of the dam in the camp area

Try the search function bro, you'll turn up a wealth of information.

I haven't chased reddies in over a year, last time was in the Goulburn river.

It was summer and they were liking big hardbody lures.

From my limited experience with reddies, thay aren't as fussy as bream when it comes to lures, try some small plastics, if there are reddies around you should know pretty quickly.

as long as you find reddies they will take anything, very agressive, however in the summer monts as you said you will have to fish deep for trout using a paravane or downrigger just use the classics eg tassies and such, also all of your breamlures will also work...

for reddies i would suggest grubs, wrigglers or critters and hop them on the bottom... they will also take vibes and there are new redfin jigs out by strike pro, i have one bu havent used it yet looks alright...

cheers

what trout are you chasing browns or rainbows? I grew up fishing for trout around the blue mountains area, mostly lake lyell, near lithgo from memory, rainbows where better in the winter months, and the browns were encounterd more in summer but both fish better in winter. We use to use small HB's like scorps n plamons reble crawlfish , celtas, tassie devils are unreal, but i think most bream/bass lures in a slim profile would be ideal,
as for reddies I never caught or many of them , but i know plastics were the go from the early days of jigging mister twisters,

reddies love the Squidgee bugs, gold in low light, wasabi or bloodworm once the sun gets higher.Ive also caught heaps on yellow grubs if the waters dirty.

Hey EMO, that Stump Jumper you used to catch that Reddy is spot on....
I love that colour and find Stump Jumpers to be the best HB's for larger fresh Native fish.
Great catch.
Cheers.
