And all glued in!!
Flip a photo upside down to see how they look, there are a lot of optical illusions with the curves,

So the chines and strakes just act like skegs on a surfboard or do they add some rigidity to the hull aswell?

basically used for lift, control (chine flats for turning) and stability when moving and for stability when at rest.

After a quiet week on the boat i got stuck in last night and today.
Dad came around and helped with the strakes and chines, well I was non stop making up batches of goo and he was putting it on the boat... what a legend!! I officially hate mixing q-cells and cabosil... so i got a cheap hand held electric mixer and now it is easy...lol

How does that filler go with the flex in the ply?

no idea, its the first one i've built
it will be fibreglassed in very soon so i presume it will be ok. The filler is made from the same resin base as the glue and what gets put on the glass itself

Got some time over the weekend to sand and sand and sand to get the strakes right, and started glassing last night. Will get the rest of the glass on today.
i obviously didn't round the strakes and chines enough as i am having air bubbles form everywhere along the strakes. No matter what i did i couldn't rectify it so looks like i'll have a fair bit of fix up work to do.

And the other side is glassed... now to wait for it to cure and then commence sanding again!!
Might need to turn the heater on to speed up the process

What an amazing sense of achievement it will be when you finally get to test it out on the water. I am really enjoying watching your progress on this, huge effort!

This isnt the vid I was hoping to find, as it doesnt really show the dramatic effect the blow torch has on the bubbles - but it shows a bloke having a rough first crack at the technique Last edited by yellow door 1; 23-04-2019 at 11:33 PM. |

thanks for that YD, however the bubble issue is due to the lack of radius corner under the fibreglass material and not air inside the epoxy itself.
i just need to ensure i have a better radius on any corners that need the glass folded along

finally got rid of all the bubbles after having to make repairs to my dremel that failed early on in the piece. I have been able to tweak my filleting technique which is a plus... soooo much better!!
Its been pretty full on, grinding, sanding, grinding, sanding, sanding, sanding............. Once this cures then a light sand, re-glass, then fairing and finally the primer before i flip!!! a few months behind schedule but i have been able to sort out a couple of issues.
