I don't think we will ever build a hospital in 2 weeks flat out being 2 years however the oppressive lockdowns are seemingly on there way. Bondi beach closed yesterday and the prime minister telling us today they are considering closing all unnecessary businesses as Britain has done recently. No Pubs or clubs gambling venues and the like only supermarkets and essential businesses to operate.
How is everyone doing in this time of uncertainty? Do any members have the virus? How is it affecting your place of work?
Hope all is well for all but fear things may be a bit drastic for some.

The govt have implemented stricter laws on isolation, schools are shutting and borders across Aus are being ‘closed’. Never seen anything like this before.

Pleasing numbers of new cases in Aus.

The numbers are pleasing but remember that the testing is still very restricted so they are only testing international travellers, their immediate contacts plus patients who meet a very narrow set of diagnostic criteria. Of course, it’s not unexpected that as the number of travellers fall, so do the number of positive results from that group, so that might be why numbers are not rising exponentially. The big worry is that people can have this virus and be contagious without any symptoms and therefore can spread the disease unless they are practising social isolation. Until the testing is done more widely, we can have no idea of the extent of community spread. The related concern is that the community sees the current numbers and become complacent. The consequence of that could be increased community spread as people who don’t realise they have the virus feel like the urgency to stay isolated has eased So they can go out a bit more and not worry so much about following govt advice. Its important to stay vigilant and inside. We’re at a crucial time now.

The testing criteria isn't that narrow anymore, a few of my friends have been tested (thankfully all negative so far) and meet none of the criteria outlined above. According to health.gov.au over 250,000 tests have been conducted in australia so far.

The other thing to know is that what we're seeing now is the reduction in spread due to the earlier stages of social distancing and it will take more than a week for any new changes to appear in the data due to the lag between contracting coronavirus and the onset of symptoms.

Sorry Mazman. I'm in the field (Im an immunologist) and have colleagues in the research and clinical areas working with this. Yes, testing numbers have increased, but the breadth of testing is still very narrow and community spread is only just beginning to be tested. Your friends may have been contacts of a known case (they are all being chased down and tested) or have been lucky by going to an area with additional tests or low numbers of potential patients. A friend in a COVID testing clinic (a doctor) is not allowed to test people who come in with some symptoms. They need to tick all the boxes, where we know many patients do not present with them all. That means many people with symptoms are just sent home to self isolate without being tested at all. In fact, around a third of people who get infected show no symptoms at all and they are not being tested. We're doing ok, but definitely need to do more. The main problem is that the current tests are time consuming to process and this is slowing things down too. The govt does realise this though and they are trying hard to address it, including getting in more tests and tests to show if you've had the disease (not just that you've got it now). That will be helpful.

That's interesting to know, they must've just got lucky because far as I know there was no known contact with someone who had tested positive.
