Surface lures for whiting
Hi guys, as it is getting into summer, I want to start chasing some whiting off the surface. Any advice on what sorta lures to use would be great. i have got the perfect set up for it, a 1-3kg lox yoshi, a Stradic fj 1000 with 4lbs sunline. so i will have no problem casting the extra light lures.
Cheers, Harry |

Ecogear px55 and lucky craft NW Pencils in light or clear colours with a little pink or orange are my favourites. I like these more than others (like the often suggested Sammy's) because they are easier to track straight. You don't want "dog walking". Using a heavier nylon/flouro leader will also aid in tracking.

Depends what I'm targeting. If I want bream as by-catch and don't mind missing more whiting, I'll dog walk. If I'm just trying to catch whiting, I want it to sort of pop and flick straight. I get slightly more follows with this method and probably around 3 times more hookups. At least in my local, the whiting seem to have a bad aim.

I'm with you on the poppers for catching more whiting. Tracking straight gives them more of a chance of hooking up. I've found the atomic pop 50 in the clear and dark shad to be pretty good. Once I got rid of both sets of trebles and replaced the rear treble with a set of pre made assist hooks my hook up rate increased even more. It also makes it easier to get the fish off the single hooks.
I've had times when I've battled for so long to get the trebles out that the rest of the whiting had moved on. (usually when 2 or even 3 of the of the trebles had been gobbled up) |

Some of those little Gomoku poppers look good . Nice colours, 3 grams and put on some assists . Atomic K9 walkers are a fave as well. If theyre not playing on the surface any clear coloured mid divers like Atomics or Pontoon 21 will do by banging it through the sand. The places i fish generally allow me to cast with the wind behind me which helps. If onshore i will walk out and cast backwards.

I find walk the dog lures on calm days work a treat and poppers on windy days.
