Mind you Sexton seemed to do pretty well on FC leader on his last trip and he was nailing stonker green backs! |

(If the knot allows) - One quick way to improve its strength is to pass the line through the eye of the hook twice before tying.
And remember that a poorly tied knot can break at half the pressure of the same knot tied correctly |

if you want to get crazy with the testing - you can pick up these luggage scales for next to nothing on ebay - they're surprisingly accurate for the cost.
I went too far and built a rig with a ratchet from a tie down, attached to a length of pine - the scales were secured at the other end. The idea being that the ratchet would slowly load the knot. But all you really need is an anchor point to attach the scales to - a wet polar fleece glove - and slow steady hand pressure to test lines up to 40llb. Just a thought but is this just happening lately using the same fluro line?
maybe just maybe you have a dodgy spool of fluro??? try a different spool and see how you go, worth a shot. If it's not then well you'll use the extra fluro anyway, it wont go to waste. |

Problem solved in the most irritating way possible. Almost wish I didn't know.
So I'm still on holidays this week so just spent a good portion of today rigging a heavy and a light combo that I can just grab and go with. I won't bore you with details except to say I also spent some time examining and playing with the leader I was fishing with last night ...... I usually pre-rig everything and it sits in the rack ready to go ... and then I remembered ... last week I rigged the caldia with a leader from a new spool of cheaper fc that I wanted to trial ... see where this is going? I usually fish with Yamatoya Harris Fighter. If I wrap it around two fingers and pull on the lure clip on the other end I have to stop before I amputate my fingers .... now the new stuff ...pop... pop...pop goes the knot every time. OMFG. So it is in the bin and I learnt a very hard lesson on what to potentially skimp on and what not to. To the positives ... It prompted me to sort my gear out so I have two separate combos suited to lighter and heavier estuary ready to go. I learnt the fish-n-fool knot. I learnt that less wraps are better than more..... er actually .... all I can think of is I dropped a great fish to save $8 over 50m of fc. Hahahhaha - have to laugh. No really. You do |

1+ favorite leader. Harris or FC rock are about the only 2 I use these days.
I once tried a cheaper spool from a local tackle store, it was called "dogtoothe" or something... I had a very similar problem to you Sloth, the whole thing ended up in the bin.

Sloth - can you name the cheap fluoro that was the culprit? Might save a few fellow BM'ers some heartache...

I have found no matter what brand I have tried 4 or 5 lb fluorocarbon just breaks . 6lb seems fine IMHO

It's from a one man operation and it gets decent reviews so I'm loathed to burn them based on my experience. |
