A "Q" for the Topshotters.

If you bought a 300m spool of braid and wanted to break it up into 3 separate topshots of 100m each - how would you do it?

I never change the backing on my small reels and just chuck a topshot of braid over the top of the old mono backing.

Those reels were originally spooled with topshots of 125 yards - so I know if I underspool slightly I'm going to get about 100m of similar braid on.

But it would be nice to be more precise - especially when I'm spooling up a new reel with no backing on it yet.

The only guaranteed way I know is to go down to the local rugby pitch (exactly 100m long) with three empty spools - walk it out - cut - then wind it back on with a drill.

This arvo I took a more scientific approach. I measured how much line was taken on to the empty spool in one revolution of the handle. (58cm) then looked at the specs of the reel to see how much line they reckon is taken on to the spool in one revolution (75cm) -

Then I did some half arsed unmathematic calculations and came up with the figure that around 160 revolutions of the handle should get me to around 100m. So I spooled it up and then went down to the rugby pitch to see how close I got.

When I got there - the rugby pitch was covered in kids and dogs and all the markings and the goal posts were gone.

So I couldnt set up a trip wire across the oval - I did it off to the side where noone would trip on it and I recon my maths was pretty darn close.

Its just occurred to me that there is a much simpler way to do this in my back yard - just stab 2 stakes in the ground 10m apart and run the line around them 10 times - (or 5m and 20 times around) (or 3m apart and 33.3 times around) the way carp anglers do

My home is on a block 150 feet long in the old scale, so simply from front to back and then back down to the front again is 300 feet (100 yards).
Add an extra 10 yards and that's 100 metres close enough.

Have one of these given as a gift. Seems to work quite well but as to the exact accuracy i am uncertain but it is very close.

Yeah I can handle a little inaccuracy - around 100m from the comfort of my lounge room is what I'm after.

I did a bit of snooping on those units before pulling the trigger and all the reviews I read were pretty complimentary about the accuracy.

There are alot of ebay sellers with ratings below 99% that sell them - but the reviews on the units themselves were good.

The guy I bought from had a 99.3% approval rating and sells them for around $12 with gst

Thought I could get away without the springs - I didnt - the nut catches and self tightens

The springs wont completely stop it happening if I make nut too tight - but if its set to stop over runs - it works

I refined the springs a little - but nuts you can lock into place are whats required for tight drag settings
