Fake bait

When trying to catch a meal or bait is there anything that you guys use that is something like how corn kernels work on carp but can be used for smaller species e.g. tommies,mullet or garfish in not being bread so it last longer on the hook until taken and not desolved.

I've added salt to squares of silver fish to toughen them up for gar.
