Inflatable PFD's and the law.
I wonder how many of us are fully aware of the legal requirements of using self inflating life jackets. Up until recently, I wasn't.
If you want to avoid a $196 fine (in Victoria), not only does your inflatable PFD need to be in excellent condition, you need to provide proof that the jacket has been serviced regularly and exactly according to the manufacturer's instructions. Most manufacturers provide a place where a record of self inspections can be written down. Most PFD's have a small section within the jacket where this information can be stored as well. At least once a year you must check your inflatable life jackets to make sure they have no excessive wear and tear. You must check the CO2 canister for signs of corrosion. If it is corroded, it must be replaced. You must manually inflate the life jacket and leave it overnight to ensure there are no leaks. Some manufacturers require you to actually weigh the CO2 canister to ensure there's been no leakage. Finally you must fold up the life jacket and record the self inspection in the appropriate place. Every 5 years, depending on the brand, you must take your PFD to a recognised service agent for a full service. It costs $35 for this service at my local agent, plus parts. It's in our own interests to have a life jacket that actually works, so it's not all bad. |
