Hard bodies advice

Looking at hitting the bream real hard this year in Gippsland mainly on the flats and snags and was hoping a few of you could make a few suggestions on must have lures for these scenarios.

So far I've got
Double clutch (60-75mm)
Norries laydown minnows
Zipbaits rigge 80mm
Atomic cranks deep
Jackall chubbies
Smith pannish
Ecogear sx40
Osp bent 76s

Looking to expand with

TD minnows
Imakatsu wasp 50
Jackall soul shads
Cranka cranks
Cranka minnows
Lucky craft flash minnows
Daiwa pro spikes

Any input would be much appreciated.

Sounds like you've got it covered, maybe a bit of overkill, or like me just a lure addiction

I'd add the Pontoon 21 crackjack 48 suspending lures, must have for me..

I've had a fair bit of success with the daiwa spike in deeper water including my biggest ever flathead.

Would ideally like to set up a tray for vibes, blades and sinking lures, one for minnows/twitch style lures and one for top water and crank baits. I've got heaps of soft plastics and only need to buy one more reel then it's all about lures. Might be a tad addicted.

I've got 3 spikes at the moment and they look mint but haven't had a swim yet. Will also be getting osp power dunks for even deeper work at some stage.

Strike Pro Bass-X is deadly in East Gippsland.
Strike Pro Hummers are also deadly slow rolled on the flats in any waterway east of Gippy Lakes.

Definitely agree with you on the hummers but haven't used the bass-x yet. There's a tackle shop in painsville that stocks strike pro so might have to grab a couple next time I'm down that way.

If you're on the flats, you might want to have an out fit with 2lb flouro straight through and a silky drag. You'll need ultra light trebles like Owner st11's to penetrate with such light drag. - and you'd have to remember to switch outfits and lures when you got to the snags

There arent enough flats where I come from to have a dedicated flats outfit - but if there were - I'd keep something with 2lb flouro handy.

Actually thats not true - I'm glad I typed this - you've just given me some inspiration for those hot summer nights over my flounder spots

I've never used fluro but have a rod ready to go and a spare spool for a 2004 luvi which for the time being ill be swapping and changing. Been advised to start with 4lb because it doesn't stretch as much as 2 and 3lb. Does that sound like good advice?

The reason I mention 2lb flouro is because I'd never have the balls to use it - but I'd like to know if going as light as possible is what it takes to turn a dud session into a the best sesh ever.

I've been massively outfished by guys using heavier leader, with the same lures, casting to the exact same water with only a pylon inbetween for 30 pylons in a row - so if you dont have the technique - lighter leader isnt going to make you a star.

But there have been those days where I've dropped from 8lb leader to 4lb and things started going my way - I was still getting outfished but not getting an arse kicking - so I reckon if you believe in the technique - thats the important thing.

A mate of mine has told me about sessions where the bite was so hot that he wasn't even using leader, just a double clutch tied to braid and absolutely braining 40cm+ bream. In saying that, I'd still be tying a leader on for first cast every time.

Is the rattle the only difference between a weighted presso minnow and a td minnow? and if it is what would make you use one over the other.

Some of the colours are different. I was using presso lures long before the td minnows became available and a few of my old favorite colours aren't available in the newer suspending models. Apart from that, they're just about the same. They're a deadly lure for the flats.

Bit reluctant to post advice as I am new to the forum. However, I have had good trips in Gippsland over the last two years and here is what worked for me once I started fishing without my mentors on the boat with me.

Jackall Squirrel 61 black eye ( suspending ) Brown suji shrimp.
Berkley 3B Puppy Dog Mongrel and 12 gauge
Berkley 3B Walking Stick fished as a jerkbait in mongrel and pointer
Daiwa spike modified bib
Local Switch 66 outfishes OSP 5: 1 in 1.2 - .8m . Most fish bent minnows as surface lures I get them to dive and keep them down. Deadly if there are minnows about

Most lures catch fish from time to time, few are consistant and forgiving of the less skilled lure caster as action imparted by the angler is 99.99% of the key to getting a hit. This is amplified many times if an angler is fishing a chubby type body. The action and timing is 100 % IMHO.
