Haha ... actually it's hard to say. I really like Daiwa stuff, but I also like some of the Shimano range too. I have owned the premium models from both manufacturers and really there wasn't a whole lot of difference between them, IMO. I own and mostly use 6 Certates in various sizes, so I suppose that says something.

They both produce overpriced crap.

Explanation:

Look at the marketing budget, prompotions and other assorted squanderings.... all of that is a pro rata component of the price you pay for a reel. Does not leave much for components.
I can pick up a reel you really like, a reel model that you know and trust.
I will be bringing a whole bundle of my own biased preferences to that assesment and can not possibly assign the same value as you.

Every reel made is constrained by the physical properties of the individual materials used...and that does not allow for a whole bundle of quality options.
In order to deliver their product at the rediculous price currently paid by consumers that puts a finite ceiling on the finished product. The machinery used for the production of the reels is not, can not be any better than the machinery available to a competitor.

We the consumers provide ALL of the mythology required to keep the process going along.

It is a tad deflating to visit a manufacturing plant and see pallets of different brand reels coming off production lines under the same roof.

Believe what you will, and buy what YOU like best is really the only answer.
We all get tribal about all manner of consumer products and thats what keeps the factories churning out the goodie we love to love right alongside the goodies we love to hate

Everyone knows that the costs involved in manufacturing reels all comes down to how Japanese they are. Stellas, Exists and everything made by Megabass cost more because of all the costly JDM parts that they are made from, including (and this may surprise you) the JDM air that the packaging is filled with.

I actually crack open the box and breath in the air inside a JDM reel's box - makes me more Type R feeling and for that brief moment see only

It's all the same company trying to appear like competition.

P.s. the bit about JDM air is pretty funny.

Shimano still will not release a proper 2000 size reel, made me by daiwa to balance out some rods I have, then I regret the daiwa purchase when it comes to service time and find out their useless unobtainium mag oil is not obtainable😒.

JDM air!!! .....now that is something I did not know!, suppose the same applies to megabass original rods too? Dare we dream of JDM air trapped within the hollow blank...could that be what gives them that extra "something" in their action?

Care to elaborate?

What reel manufacturer would you recommend then if they both are "crap" in your own words?

I am very happy with my 10 years old Daiwa SOLs (6 of them for that matter) and 2 Shimano Sustains 2500 FE.

I am yet to be convinced that the Mag Seal feature is a "bees kneez" of the latest Daiwa design.

In which the product is the object and tribal loyalties the victim.

I keep all my Daiwa boxes, toss out the Shimano boxes... Daiwa has better quality inks, printing and graphics.
