french poly bones

few pics from recent trip. sorry im not much of a story teller.

the locals told me this is not the spot to catch jo io [bonefish]

IMG_2900.jpg

I said it looked perfect, and thought I would give it a go anyway

IMG_2897.jpg

as soon as I started my walk I saw bonefish immediately from a distance in the crystal water. these flats also had longnose emperor, fugu puffer, triggers, and heaps of sharks. yikes!!

IMG_2898.jpg

these remote locations are really cool, bonefish were pretty thick but so were the mozzies. my wife has now ben told she has ross river fever. looks like our next trip might be to somewhere a little more temperate

cheers bomb

No good to hear about your missus mate, hope she comes good soon.

Wicked stuff with the bone fish, they are still on my list. It's funny what the locals on the islands say, I was in Vanuatu last month and all the locals were telling me there are no fish/it's overfished. 2 minute walk from where we were staying put that to rest!

thanks G,
yeah mate, the locals sometimes cant see the forest because of the trees. the guys at the place we stayed told me I had to travel to the faraway, faraway, sandflat to get bones...so , I did.

but on the last day whilst waiting for our airport transfer, I sat on the jetty at the resort and watched schools of bonefish feed on the flats right in front of me. it was like a great tease, as I had searched these areas near our stay wiithout seeing a single bonefish

IMG_2832.jpg

the coral bommies were great for plastic and popper chucking also

cheers

How good does that water look?! Congrats on all the bonefish! I think everyone in Brisbane has had Ross river fever at some point, it can be as bad as a minor cold or completely debilitating, I had it when I was 20, but Green Forest fever and Denghi fever make Ross River look like Mary Poppins. Hopefully it isn't too bad for your wife.

I found that locals in Thailand had no idea that their close inshore reefs still held fish. I think that where people fish in boats they often overlook the sand flats, close reefs etc on the way to the deeper bits. It happens in Australia too. How many times have you turned up somewhere and been told by the "servo packet prawn" locals that there are no fish....then a different technique etc is used and hey presto....fish!!! I've caught pike in a French alpine lake with a French mate who grew up there and had never seen a pike in his life, to the point that he didn't know what it was called. "Le Poisson avec beacoup des dents" (fish with lots of teeth) was his name for pike....

Can't see the forest for the trees is an expression that easily translates across the world, happens all across the globe and doesn't just effect fishos.

Completely jealous of those bonefish pics!!

thanks for the kind words and for viewing. just a couple more pics that ive just uncovered in another camera.

these are lobe-tailed snapper. they love flies and fight like demons....and there are thousands of them!

IMG_2876.jpg

some remnant flies, that survived the trip. I lost plenty

IMG_2884.jpg

Awesome stuff.

It's also possible with locals that they don't want you to know about the local fish around. I've got a couple of mates formerly from the Polynesian countries and they enjoyed telling overseas tourists to go far away to fish because all the areas were dynamited or netted out.

Looks like you went through a few flies too.

Nice work Bomb.
