4-8kg High End Spin
Hi Guys,
I've got a 2508 High Gear Certate paired with a 9ft Century HPR that I use as a travel outfit (particularly around the tropics). The reel is spooled with 16lb 8Braid and it's a dynamite combination for fish like tuna and XOS bonefish, where you need to throw small lures but still have a strong backbone (it can throw a 7g metal around 70m no drama at all and still apply upwards of 5kg of drag). The problem is it's a bit too long to use in my yak, so the wife has given me the green light to pick up a shorter rod to pair with this reel for boat/kayak fishing. Budget is unlimited (within reason) but I'm leaning towards one of the high quality Japanese models. Not really interested in a custom solution at this stage. I'm happy to buy sight unseen if I can get a reasonable appreciation of its pros and cons from guys who use it (noting that rod feel is extremely subjective). Primary use will be throwing stickbaits around the 70-110mm range, so while I'm looking for a hardbody rod, I'd prefer a much faster action than your typical hards stick, more in line with a plastics rod (I find it easier to give the lure action with a faster rod). Target species will be large flatties/jewies/snapper but also with the grunt to pull a decent jack away from structure. You're probably thinking that 16lb is pretty heavy for that sort of work - well on one hand it kind of is, but on the other it's not uncommon to hook into massive jewies were we fish (think upwards of 50lb) - and I'm kinda attached to my lures This rod will basically be a "monster killer" for me, not necessarily my first choice every time. So far I've narrowed it down to two options - first is the MB Phase 3 F3-610XS, second is the MB Racing Condition F3-511XSRC. From what I understand, the Phase 3 is a faster action so probably closer to what I want, with the RC being closer to your typical hards rod. The length though is a bit of a downside - I was hoping to keep it around 6'6", but at the end of the day it's not a deal breaker. I notice a few people on here have the lighter models of these two - would love to hear a direct comparison if anyones had a go of both families, or if anyone has any first hand experience with either of these models. If you can offer any alternatives too, that'd be great Thanks, Brad |
