Flouro vs Mono on surface lures?

As leader material, there seems to be varied opinions on this. Mainly interested for whiting and bream.

What is your preference and why? Breaking strain? Length?

Maxima ultra-green mono as leader... cheap, extremely abrasion resistant and floats, cheap too.

Thanks Slazmo. Do you have a breaking strain preference in the estuaries?

10 pound is where I'm normally at. Chasing whiting i can go down to the 4lb without worry.

Pretty good gear as the refractory index of the line is quiet high and is near invisible in saltwater, been a reliable line and leader and hugely underrated, underrepresented material for years due to snobbery - same too Vanish FC line, makes great low cost leader than buying off smaller volume spools.

There are better lines and leaders but dont always let cost dictate performance.

Unitika Trout Clear in 12lb. Not too long, around 60cm. Its a very supple leader and also able to deal with bycatch like a nice big flathead. I would go thinner if I was targeting bream though and also make the leader longer. At $20 for 150m its good value.

I use fluoro for leader whether I'm fishing surface or cranking. I just couldn't be bothered changing back and forth

Is that what you would use to target whiting on surface then?

So is the shorter leader (60cm) to keep the knot out of the eyes for casting distance, or some other reason? Appreciate your experience DrLuvski.

For whiting fishing I have the wind blowing onto my back which helps for casting distance and a 7'6" rod, I use fluorocarbon for no particular reason because my leader is basically not in the water because I'm high sticking my retrieve for the poppers. In the right conditions with a light leader and wind you can make the popper go parallel in front of you.

Yep, that and there's no real reason for more. It'll just drag in the water and as it has more stretch than the braid it feels like I have less control of the lure.

What do you see as the advantage over FC?

Mono floats, FC sinks. Best to have it floating for surface lures although I have used FC when targeting bream on the surface but its been pretty thin (4lb) and worked fine.

FC may drag the surface lure under the water or in the case of small poppers I find it changes the action quite a bit.

One thing that put me off mono leaders was this article

According to tackle tour. (They are using trilene XL monofilament to compare)

"Now, while our fluorocarbon lines were relatively unaffected by being wet, we did note an over 50% drop in abrasion resistance of our 12lb Trilene XL monofilament after being soaked in water for more than 10 minutes. This test seems to validate another claim by the industry: In real world conditions, fluorocarbon lines, are more abrasion resistant."

Not sure if its completely relevant to popper fishing but it might be worth noting
