Baitcaster for Kingfish
Hey guys,
I've recently started targeting kingfish from my kayak and purchased a 4-8kg Majorcraft rod paired with a 2508R-PE Daiwa reel. I've got no issues with the combo and it does the job perfectly but considering majority of my hook ups have been with a jigging technique, i find that it's hard to know when the jig is being taken on the drop. Before i got this combo, i was using a light baitcast reel and was able to feel the takes on the drop while my thumb was on the spool. Once i felt the take, i'd turn the handle and hook the fish. The problem with this was the outfit was too light. I've been looking at some Japanese tackle sites and see they have a bunch of reels that might suit this situation: Ryoga BJ, Catalina BJ, Millionaire Basara, '17 Saltiga BC etc. Is anyone using a heavier BC outfit for this type of fishing that they can provide feedback on? I'm now wishing i didn't sell my Ryoga 1016HL a few years back Chris |

Hey mate,
Ive done similar work using bait caster reels. I used a Lexa 300HD and it was very good on the kings. One of the guides around me uses one and its caught him tonnes of fish.. If it can survive charter work it can survive you! Alternatives to the aiwa stable could include a tonne of shimano reels like ocea jigger, ocea conquest etc.. Pretty of reels out there |

I was looking at the new Lexa CC (centrifugal brake + drag clicker) and that looks good as well. I might try and check them out in person to see what they're like. |
