So they’re screwing us with lifejackets as well as flares now.....

Ok fisherman. Just replace ALL your gear each time you fish. Just to be on the safe side.

They probably made them to last in those days. Of recent times i have lost a little faith in inflatable PFD's following a failure of a 3 year old vest during an annual self service test. Wife refuses to wear one now even in the river on bar crossings and in the ocean she wears a standard non inflatable type which i find to hot and to restrictive but still worry about the safety of inflatables generally.

Yeah I've been witness to the "testing" of old flares - never seen one fail.

Yeah Life jackets are a weird one with me - I dont like wearing them - even the inflatable yoke style - I sort of understand their necessity but I still dont wear one if I dont have to. But I like having them on board

I'd chuck one on if things got really bad but that happens very rarely - I've only ever thought about doing once..

Theres a few situations were I'd definitely put one on

Fishing alone
Mean Bar Crossings / Navigating through surf
If you get hit by a sudden change in weather - like a Squall
If your injured, drunk or clumsy.

But for everything else I throw myself on the mercy of the gods and pray everyone else is watching where they're going

Has anyone tried the waist/bum bag version pfd that I have seen used on a couple of fishing shows? Regards HBt.

Nah the ones I seen have a metal tube - (Hot tip - always point the flare away from your face when setting it off)
