Apparently it’s never been trialled in the natural environment anywhere in the world and only in lab trials. It’ll need some exceptional management if/when it’s released.
The suggestion to use rotenone in the rivers is would seem even worse not noting its full affects on a environment or ecology. doing nothing does not seem to be option either |

I thought this virus had been released in other countries with massive carp kills and hadn't affected any other critter in the water or on land ...

Yeah I'd read the virus only effects carp aswell - I might have to go back and have a look at the fish farmers sources

Turns out the fish farmer was quoting the CSIRO report - the author of that report does seem pretty keen on the virus being used.
Might need a science guy to look at those result for a more educated opinion - but his explanation of native species deaths during the trial would suggest they should probably have another crack at it His conclusions are on page 50 . Heres the tables as they appeared in the csiro report https://www.pestsmart.org.au/wp-cont...ect-CyHV-3.pdf Last edited by yellow door 1; 13-05-2018 at 07:37 PM. |

We caught carp last year that had red blotches on them. Never seen that before. 'accidental' release like the calicivirus?

Yeah I used to catch a few of those in the creek - I initially thought they were wounds from aggressive spawning in amoungst the rocks but some sort of virus sounds more likely
