New rod and reel - Kings, Salmon, Tailor etc.

Hi all,

I'm looking for a new outfit to chase Kings (mainly rats), Salmon, Tailor, Jewfish etc. from the kayak. I'm not too sure on budget so throw me a few suggestions at various price points. I'm thinking maybe a 3-6kg 7ft rod, between a 2500 - 3000 sized Daiwa/2500 Shimano, and up to 15lb braid - outfit will be used mainly to throw plastics.

Let me know your thoughts.

Cheers,
Chris

I use a nitro viper. Handles the legal kings too.

Cheers mate. I'll check the Nitro rods out. I'm pretty sure a place near work stocks them.

Anyone used any of the current Samurai range for these sorts of fish?

Seems like the Major Craft Sky-Road 8-16lb (seabass - boat) rod might be a winner.

SKR-70ML/S

I contacted Plat and they don't have any 1pc models in stock but do have 2pc rods... any ideas for other Japanese tackle stores that might stock the 1pc?

Kazu from jpangler can order any rod for you as long as its instock at the manufacturer. Just send him a message saying what you want and he will send you a quote. Shipping is generally 4000YEN about $46.

Thanks mate. I did email jpangler a few days back and they've advised that the 1pc model is out of stock with the manufacturer; every tackle store has said this so far. I might just grab the 2pc from Digitaka. Shipping on the 1pc almost doubles the price completely compared to the 2pc anyway :O

Cheers,
Chris

Anyone know what sorta sized reel would be best paired with the Sky Road 7ft 8-16lb? Please note that i haven't ordered the rod yet so can't really tell for myself what will match up.

I'm thinking of a Luvias - either the 2510PE-H or the 3012. Will probably run Super PE (15lb PE1.5) or Castaway (16lb PE1)

I've got one of the 702 skyroad and find it matches up well with a 3000 shimano so the 25xx daiwa should be about right. Tried my 4000 biomaster on it but it was too big.
So far I've stopped 30cm to legal kings on it among other less notable fish.

Cheers bud. What sorta line and knots are you using? Any issues with the micro guides?

25lb leader to pe 1.2 line is about as heavy as I'm comfortable with the guides. Using an fg knot.
