3. select the size wad punch that is as close to the external diameter of the washer as possible. dont worry if its too big as you can carefully and gently file it down to shape

5. now select the wad punch that is as close to the inner hole diameter as possible. dont go too big, you dont want a hole too big. a smaller hole can be carefully filed out to suit

6. nearly done. all you need to do know is clean the washer up. if your washers are a bt rough on the edges, file gently. once filing is done, using a chemical to clean, i use shellite, gently rub the washers with a damp cotton tip to remove any residue of filing, cutting, random pooh. some sort of cloth can be used to. not one thatll leave fibres everywhere but

Hey mate. Ive seen them online for various prices. Obviously the higher the quality the higher the price. Some hobby stores have them. I couldnt find any in bunnings but i didnt look real hard. All tools havd them ive been told. I ended up just borrowing some ftom a bloke at work. Im going to get my own set, they r pretty handy. Also getting some digital calipers for measuring drag stacks and washer diameters.

Good stuff mate,
I think the initial outlay will be covered just doing your own washers let alone making them for others. Great thread and it has inspired me to follow suit.

Never again shall i be content with stock standard drag washers........

My cals grease arrived today, along with a few other prezzies to myself lol
i installed the new washers into my calcutta te 300 after stripping it down and regreasing with the cals. managed to get 18lb of max drag, which was buttery smooth throught with minimal if any start up inertia. Shimano rates the reel at 16 lb drag, so not a massive increase but much smoother than the original washers.
Next up was my baitrunner 6500b, rated at 7kg drag. new washers lubed up and chucked in, managed 30lb, scales didnt go higher, def more than 14.5kg. same as before, smooth as silk.
cant wait to upgrafe my little reels

Awesome, I'm going to get this happening on my own reels soon as well. Seems very easy, now I just need to learn how to fully service my own reels and I'm set!!

Thanks Nags for the write up.

No worries mate

I have undertaken the same journey, have mastered overheads and baitcasters, but spinning reels scare me lol

Point to note, always remember your services and upgrades may/will void warranties.

I would advise practicising on a cheap reel, or someone else's lol

Cheers

Continuin on with the diy carbontex thread...

Time to install.
Dont have photos, dont think theyre necessary for this bit.

Firstly, to avoid lubricant cross contamination, use a cotton tip/rag and some shellite type liquid, thoroughly remove the old grease from the spool, gear (for bc), washers and drag knob.

Second, with a small paint brush, paint on a THIN layer of cals reel and drag grease onto the gear/bottom of spool cavity

Third, paint a coat of grease onto each carbontex washer. With CLEAN fingers, GENTLY BUT FIRMLY work the grease into the material. Dont leave much residue, just enough to leave a little bit of stickyness. Dont grease metal washers.

Four, install drag stack as per schematic. Paint a LIGHT coat of grease to the teeth on the top washer for the clicker if present. Then paint a LIGHT coat to the base of the drag knob and the rubber seal. this will preserve the rubber and enhance water resistance.

Five, reassemble reel and enjoy a whole new woeld of tough, smooth drag

I use a set of boga grips to test my new drag curve. I tie the line to the grips direct from the spool, so i can test the reels drag independant of the effects of the rod and guides.

Again, i hope this assists.

Cheers
