Jewie reel size

Hey there,

I'm on the hunt for a new Jewie reel, which will be used to for soft plastics, etc on a 5-10lb MajorCraft Volkey.

Now I'm kinda leaning towards a 2013 Certate, but just unsure as to what size. The standard 2500 size looks as if it would do the job but is there any benefits in the other variations of the 2500 size, specifically the 2508PE, 2510Pe-H, 2510R-PE, etc....

Cheers

A 2500 certate is a ballsy reel. I use a 2500r hyper certate on jews and I've never had a problem or felt under gunned. It's a solid reel with a tough drag, great for jews.

Yeah nice. Is there much of a difference in size between the 2500r and standard 2500? They have different body sizes yes?

2500r has 3000 sized gears. Like adsy says a 2500 is a good sized reel for jewing as long as your not land based. Id beef your rod choice up a little tho. I fish a 6-12 or 6-14lb rod (and often push them way past this limit). If you intend to release the fish you want to put some hurt on them or they may come up to the boat dead. Just ask Piscature, hes the expert jew killah haha.

Cheers mate, I'll be out of the yak probably 99% of the time so sounds like the reel will be good. A new rod might have to be on the shopping list too then as I don't intend on eating anything from Melbourne's urban waterways haha.

I use a 2508R for all my Jewie fishing these days and it's fine for the areas I fish. I've found it ok landbased but haven't caught any mammoth fish LB yet, but up to that 90cm mark or so I haven't had an issue.

Agree with Benny on the rod, get a ballsier rod if your actively targetting Jewies, if for no other reason than to work heavier lures and set the hooks properly

Sounds like the 2508r might be the way to go as the plan is to have this as a dedicated jew combo. Any recommendations on rods around $250? I do like the Volkey's and they have one in 6-12lb...

Throw in my two cents, I've got a 2510R-PE certate for my jewie combo running 14lb braid and love the size both physically and in terms of line capacity. Fits 200m of 14lb unitika perfectly

I've only caught 3 small Jews in my time josh. But they have all been on your old 6-14lb black label. It's almost perfect. My new megabass is nicer in hand but not by heaps.

I have been looking into the Procyon EX 4000 for a jewie/snapper reel. Just starting to read a few reviews but they seem reasonable.
