Jan reports
Thought I’d try and revive this thread name.
Went fishing at Bournda Lagoon, which is a small estuary at the back of a surf beach near Merimbula on sth coast of NSW. Water is still, weedy bottom, brush along edges. Great spot for kids, who hav3 previously caught lots of bream here but this day went swimming instead. I tried a few SPs and got a few hits, but mostly curious mullet and whiting. Decided to join the kids and put on a mask and saw a lot of interesting fish. A few school mulloway, occasional salmon, 8 large eels all living in branches of a fallen tree and some big bream on opposite bank to where my fishing gear was. Decided to commandeer a surf mat and paddled across to other side holding rod and tackle box above water line. Got over there and dropped lure in amongst the hole I’d seen, but no luck and eventually lobbed the lure into an overhanging tea tree, which ended that trip. So no fish there, but later in week headed further north an did a bit of snorkelling with the lids and took along my Hawaiian sling. Got a nice yellow fin, which became dinner. Not the most spectacular catch to start the thread, but beautiful part of the world and thought this was something a bit different to report and easily topped to inspire others to contribute. |

Couple of my bream from Dec-Jan. Mostly on surface pencils (Tiemco Trout Trick), pink grubs (Ecogear Grass Minnow M), OSP bents and slim swims. Heaps of smaller bream around in the Hoppies at the moment, plenty of big fish around too but tough to fool. Still getting a 40 or two most sessions land based or in the boat

Clear water making the fish spooky but more fun to sight cast. A mix of fish arrows, td95s and nymphs doing the damage.

And heres a Hopkins bass from a couple of months back, something you don't see everyday but they were getting around after the floods. Went 46cm and towed the yak all over the river.

They were close to the bank (although its only about 50m across) and in about 4 or 5 ft of water. I saw 3 of them together, prob 50-60cm long, hovering close to the bottom above weeds and next to a large patch of reeds. They weren't too worried by me but swam off pretty quickly once I headed toward them. |

went out this morn and put he heavier gear away after a thousand casts for naught. 2nd cast on the light outfit nearly cuts my finger how hard he hit. only went 70cm but pain in the backside to get in on 6lb gear with wind and tide blowing the yak in wrong direction. on a zman 2.5 grub |

Nice cortinaboy. I live less than 10 mins from bournda how nice is it there! Super interesting to hear there are Jews in the lagoon it’s rarely to never open to the ocean and such a tiny waterway.
I’ve put my hobie on it plenty and had a blast every time. Cheers for the report |

Not all in Jan but would love to quickly share the beasts ive been playing with at my local over my last few trips. The bass have been on surface lures, bream and perch on minnow hardbodies. My mates on these trips got among them too but I’ll just share my pics!

I guess you’re v familiar with the bream in there already, but there are some big black bream and big eels so it’s a healthy system! Saw ( from shore) Quite a lot of what I think were big sand whiting ( or perhaps mullet?) too in shallows but they were pretty skittish and I couldn’t entice a bite. Tried spinning off beach too as it looked great but not a touch. Seems to be a bad habit of trawlers running along the south coast beaches and scooping up salmon. Saw one at Tathra beach, which is a real shame. |
