PE braid cleaner and conditioner spray

Alright - Gimme the skinny on this stuff

- How long does a can last you?
- how often do you reapply?
- is it a miracle worker or is it more of a placebo effect?
- did you start using it, then stop or is it an essential bit of kit?
- were there any unexpected benefits like increased casting distance?
- are there any brands you wont buy again?
- does anyone know the ingredients so I can get a home brew going?

Feel free to answer as many or as few questions as you like.

Heres a photo of one of the brands available

Never used anything like it, preferring just to thoroughly wash it.
I've heard guys say it can add weight to the line and reduce casting distance in lighter situations, such as casting bream hard bodies.

I Haven't thought about it until now, but I wonder how Armor All would go?

Yeah when I raised the issue of alternatives on a facebook page one bloke said "This stuff really works"

https://www.vetnpetdirect.com.au/mnt...2nDsgBc99Hfuz4

Another reply mentioned pirtek lanolin spray.

There was also mention of hair conditioner but I'm not sure how serious that was

Years back, I remember a mate who was a hairdresser tell me the main active ingredient in hair conditioner was silicone, so there might actually be some fact to that.

Yeah a bloke mentioned the varivas was "... based on a silicon spray but has a few additional additives for the uv stabilising and salt inhibiting"

My concerns with the hair conditioner were the added scents they use in human conditioners.

I've got a can of Innox (lanolin based spray lube) - so I'll give one reel a coating of that and see if I notice any difference in performance

BFL, I've used the Varivas PE spray for ages, when I come back from a northern trip and won't be using my bigger reeels for a while, I wash the line on the spool, let it dry, then strip about 50m off the spool, spray the line still on, then rewind the 50m and spray that.

I have never had any salt build up creating rough spots on the line, when I use this method. The conditioner soaks in quickly and I let it dry before storing my reels.

I do the same to my smaller bream/whiting reels at the end of the season.

I will be interested to see if the Lanox leaves a residue on the line as lanolin is essentially a grease, let us know how it goes.

I used to spray my line with silicon spray, I don't know for sure if it helped preserve the line but in my mind theoretically I thought it would help.

Yeah my lines get used in both fresh and salt water in the same week - so I'm sure that helps me when it come to salt build up - I am always careful on that first cast of the session though.

I do have some saltwater only lines - I'll give them the first test and see how it goes this evening

Yeah if Spiz reckons its based on a silicone spray, it should be sweet - I dont actually have a huge problem with line management or braids failing before they should but if a spray can increase the life of the line by 3 times - its worth looking into - especially on braids that cost over $4 for 150m topshot

Only downside so far is its slipperier. so its harder to manually strip line against a stiff drag.

Other than that - It doesnt scare Pinkies away. (seems to have really loosened up my elbows as well)

Had a couple of breakages on decent fish the other day - never happened before - and the only thing I have done different than in the past, is spray inox on the line - Could be coincidence or could be the inox - I've asked an inox guru if there is any thing in it that will break down line - I will report back later.

Slaz thinks Inox isnt a substitute for PE conditioner

"Andrew Slazmo - Oil mostly would affect the PE line itself IMHO. Personally I wouldn't spray it on my line ever...

I do spray Saltaway and Starbrite salt remover on my lines with no adverse reactions - the Starbrite stuff does have PTFE in it and my brain says it helps in casting 😅"

I believe you will find it's the hydrocarbons that are in the can not the inox itself, as all plastics are oil based the hydrocarbon propellant in the can does damage plastic also stay away from isopropyl alcohol.

I had the same issue with some plastic locking cams on a well known brand, the manufacturer said don't use anything with hydrocarbons in it, upon looking into it hydrocarbons are in nearly all spray based aerosol cans.

The locking cams were replaced by the company and since have had no further issues once I stopped using aerosol based sprays.

That is very interesting - I'll check the can to see what the propellant is in Inox cans.

Yep that checks out

hydrocarbons bad for PE

This is what I meant when I asked about lanox BFL, very different product.
