Abu Garcia Revo Premier 20 (PRM20) Tear Down

So I recently purchased a second hand PRM20. This is going to sit on my Abu Garcia velocity rod and be used for soft plastics.

I've been on the fence about sending a few reels of to Slaz or whether to crack the cases myself.... Funny thing is I've torn down and rebuilt my dirt bike for years but have been really wary of getting into a reel. I think its mainly the fear of "fiddly" and the presence of tiny Jesus springs.

So anyway - the reel turned up and was a bit grindy and also looked and smelled like it had a good workover of wd-40 so I figured what the hell - might as well have a crack.

First step - get the schematic.

Couldn't find it

Oh well .... how hard can it be ?

Original condition:

Proper preparation prevents piss poor performance:

First step was to check out the spool and drag stack:

and the first surprise .... a removable spool lip and I'm assuming thats salt in there ...

The prm20 has a self-contained carbon matrix drag which is generally dry

Breaking into it was the next surprise - it had been greased.

Not really an issue but I prefered to return it to stock

Now having no schematic but I dunno - that o-ring looks in an odd position ? Woudn't expect an o-ring within the stack too be honest. Its gone back in but if anyone knows what the deal is with that I'd love to hear!

All cleaned up and ready to re-assemble:

Now back to the reel ... and this is cool (I think). The reel has a bearing in the drag cap as well as on the shaft so the spool sits centrally, supported either end by bearings

Remove the lower bearing stack and rotor

Clean and oil the line roller bearings:

Then back to the guts of the reel

And wouldn't you know it. My first Jesus spring encounter

Carefully removed the spring to de-activate the anti-reverse and time to open it up

That stem is crazy light. I've read they can snap - I don't doubt it lol.

First look at the all aluminium gearbox

Bit of a greasy grinding paste in there

Bit of a puzzle to figure out the dis-assembly order without the schematic but got there in the end

Everything cleaned and laid out how it came out ... kind of ....

Some minor corrosion evident

Now it took a good 15 minutes to get the gearbox back together. Felt extremely pleased with myself as I did first go with no schematic.

Looked up from where I'd been working on the reel

hmmmm ......

The bearing race was missed from in-front of what I'll call the worm-gear-shaft-thingy. Best bit was in order to put it in .... everything had to come out again

Plain sailing from there - except for pinging that bloody spring three times trying to get it in. Lucky it didn't disappear into the living room ....

Feels heaps and heaps better. I ended up putting a thin smear of marine (nautilus) grease on the moving parts and oiling the bearing races with the daiwa reel oil. Next time I'll go and get some reel grease or inox or something but just used with what I had to hand this time.

The grinding has gone. Its smooth - not luvias smooth, but probably just under caldia smooth which is heaps better than sedona smooth and way better than how it arrived.

Feeling pretty chuffed with my first crack at a reel service and I know I can improve things on the cleaning and lubricant side of things for next time.

hmmm....

well you can't get a schematic via the abu website but you can google a soron sx20 pdf .... so I tried it for a PRM20 ... so if anyone needs it here it is:

Revo PRM20 Schematic

Looks like its right ....

I also just pulled the spare spool apart. Same order (broken o-ring though)... so its in the right spot. A bit of an oddity

Thanks for indirectly pointing me in the right direction on the schematic

Nice mate! I'm still too scared to pull a reel apart!

Nice little tear down and pictures!

A large clear plastic bag for springs helps! Put the reel and pull the spring out in the bag because if it pings off it will be contained in the bag.

Keep up the good work
