what is the difference??

G'day fishos.

I'm buying a new trout rod for bashing WA snaggy streams - mainly throwing small to medium HB's on 4lb Fireline and 8/10lb leader.

Ideally i'd love an Edge BW BSR702-2 rod matched with a Revo MGX 20, but a bit expensive.

I already have a couple G Loomis 2-8lb rods with 1000 size shimanos still surviving after 15yrs hard bush-bashing and love them. but they deserve a well-earned spell.

looking for a new rod to compliment my trouting for next decade (and use old stuff for back-up only).

the reel i'll be using is a Stradic c14 1000FB.

there's the bit of context and now i'll ask the question - as i can't work out the answer for the life of me.

what is the difference (i need a 2 piece) between a Samurai Reaction 181-270 and a 201-270?

181 is rated 2-6lb and a 270 3-6lb is the only difference i can find between them.

splitting hairs it seems when deciding which rod to choose from for tossing and working HB's under logs in overgrown brooks?

As ordering online i won't be able to cuddle and cradle myself and i'm buggered (same price etc) if i can work out what the real diff between them is?? appears too marginal to make a diff?

181 and 201? what's the best option for the syle of fishing outlined?

opinions much appreciated.

I recently went through the same.

There is not a great deal of difference between the two rods the 201 isn't as crisp/stiff as the 181. I was told that the 181 is actually a baitcaster blank that somehow ended up on a spinning rod and people liked it.

I have a 203 for HB and decided on the 181 for SP.

In this video I am using the 181 if it is of any use to you. I have cast down to 1/32 on the 181 no probs.

Onya Bloodworm.

the 203 seems the equivalence of the 201, just a 1 piece.

i still can't ascertain which rod (201 or 181) might be slightly better for HB's and 4lb Fireline?

however, from your input, maybe a lighter/faster action with the 201 could pertain a slight edge for throwing HB's?

Nice video mate.

Thanking you.

For hardbodies the the 201 will probably be a better choice than the 181.

Most people look for a softer rod for HB to prevent pulling the small treble hooks. The 203 has a moderate taper so bends evenly almost to the grip.

The 201 and 181 are a fast taper so the top third of the rod bends first, generally a better rod for soft plastics.

Quite a few people didn't like the 203 as it is very soft, bordering on sloppy.
If you search around people seem to like the 201 for HB.

Hopefully this picture helps you.

Appreciated Bloodworm.

The only thing that makes me still consider the 181 instead of the 201, is that many people (example this forum) rate Samurai's as "noodles", and for my mind Samurai are (my opinion is based solely on the Samurai Ledge (for herring light beach fishing) I possess) - an extra 'whippy' brand of rod. A very fast taper/action.

So maybe the 181 and little extra stiffness mind be the go my specific scenario/likeability?

Onya.

Onya Juzza.

That was like the 'Gettysberg Address' reply mate.

Said a lot in very few words

I'll take a dip with the 181.

Thanks for the input.

and just 5% in it in the end decision-making Bloodworm and thanks as well.

You will be happy, awsome for sx40, chubby minnow, jade etc.
Fishing rods are a very personal choice but i like the 181, has a nice soft tip without too much noodle and a solid amount of power in the lower section.
The smaller diameter guide train match nicely with a 1000 size reel also.
Very light rod , weight wise👍

No, both can be had as a 1-piece.

The 201 is stiffer than 203. I'd say that the 201 is more of an "all rounder" whereas the 203 is more suited for HBs especially fishing fluoro straight through.

For snags I'd use a 201. It can be fished with either SPs of HBs no problem.
