They just look like garish tatters of half-cooled metal. I don't know where the Daiwa designers are heading with the look of their new threadlines. Personally I think they are losing touch with the historical Japanese design ethos that gives JDM tackle it aesthetic edge and attraction, instead moving towards forms that are more sci-fi and bio-mechanical... in short, a bit more US market in appearance, like bad bio-mechanical tattoos. When the last Stella came out, especially the models with the gold handles, I thought "well, that is a classic looking, subtly lined reel". But these new exists just seem to have lost all the classic lines that have made their reels so popular. The design is just too aggressive. Fishing is a tactful and subtle past-time, coercing nature into forgetting you are there - tricking and lulling fish (when they are not fiercely feeding, which is most of the time) into feeling comfortable about taking your lure - rather than violently stabbing at them... these new exist designs look more like sci-fi weapons that shoot fish dead.
With enthusiast reels, I really don't mind so much as to what materials they are made out of as long as they are mechanically smooth and look the goods (I'm still trying to track down a 2000 sized, untreated aluminum Vintage Certate to use for shallow, saltwater Barra fishing off the rocks)... I know a beaten up old certate can do exactly the same job as a new Stella, Exist, Megabass reel or Branzino. But I am a sucker for reels whose design suggests something of - and accentuates - my actual experience of being out on the water, in nature, casting at fish... where all those hours of work are forgotten and you're content and thankful just for being alive with a fishing rod in your hand. The new exist suggests nothing of this too me, which is why I won't buy one. I think the old airitys look much better.

I can agree with that deeply subjective analysis. Bring back the elegance, the class.

The Roller bearing has been Daiwas archilles heels in the past and this alone is almost enough to convince me to pay rediculous money for zaion.

Beautiful reel. the Vintage custom, however is fresh only. But still worth getting just to look at. Missed out on purchasing these whilst they were cheap, stupid really.

Yeah I dunno. I've never had an issiue with any daiwa line rollers. I just think that a couple of ceramic or titanium bearings would with a decent seal around them would do the job. Squeezing a mag seal in there just seems un-necessary. It's just another part that will have to be serviced by daiwa, which will undoubtedly be costly.

it won't need servicing since salt water can't get in

loving all the tech .. taking fishing to the next level

i have enough trouble using $300 reels and trying to not get them wet or getting them scratched lol

won't see me using a $800+ reel (unless someone else owns it).

It's funny how we carry on about how reels look. When was the last time you looked at your reel while you where actually fishing with it?

This is coming from a person who loves bling as much as anyone!

I look at my reels and rods when I'm fishing, I love a nice reel and hate when they get scratches, I won't stop looking at the scratch. I would be discusted to look down at it, hideous, they went way to crazy and I'm their target market I would have bought one straight away if they looked good, it's the spool that makes them look crap.

looks great except the handle...terrible...love the saltiga styling on the handle surround bit..if they have fixed the line roller issue with magseal then it will really prove the effectiveness of the technology...i think this reel will be an exceptional performer..daiwa have risked alot though the styling is very aggressive on the spool and handle maybe a little too much...wouldn't buy one as they are too light for the fishing i do (barra...new branzino though
