Agreed, with the FG that does sound strange.

Once you've learned to tie the FG correctly its hard to use any other knot. Took me a while to convert, but there no turning back now!

Someone posted on my facebook feed the easiest FG method I have ever seen and worked first time me! To the point where I could pull this off in a kayak if need be...

Great vid

The key seems to be keeping tension on the braid while tying the knot.

Yep, helps a lot, I also found pulling the mono tight after each wrap neatens to knot up a lot too. But that method seriously works a treat, every other vid I've found just seems too hard to be practical to me, this is the first I've seen that make me feel like I could easily do it fishing, not just at home in 'preparation'.

Im in the same boat, found several videos with different methods to tie the knot, but could never get it quite right so went back to uni, albrights, etc. After that video, can now change every braid setup I have to FG no worries.

Hey guys, I recently have shy'd away from using the FG knot and in the last few days i've tried to start tying them again. I can seem to tie 5lb and up easily, but when trying to tie in 3 and 4lb, it breaks at the leader end everytime. Has anyone else had this problem?

After losing a good fish at the coota kayak comp on fg I am not using it on anything lighter than 8lbs. Back to a SB for me on light lines.

That is brilliant!
Thanks heaps for sharing that mate, when I get home from work I'm going to give that a crack! Hopefully I can get the knot right for the first time.

If you have never felt the urge to change your knot - dont. They're a pain in the arse to tie and if you've never felt your knots would be better if they were stronger and passed through the guides more easily - then there is no problem to fix.

I started to tie them because I was unhappy with my knots clunking through the guides and breaking too easily. I was fishing for big fish and wanted to make sure I was doing everything possible to land them.

But after a while I started seeing problems with my light tackle knots aswell. Its now got to the point, where I feel I am cheating myself if I dont tie an fg - what ever the breaking strain.

But there are certain scenarios where I know a double uni or surgeons loop would be more than adequate. Those knots have proven themselves over many years to be up to the task in many fishing scenarios.

But I also know that an FG would out perform both those knots in the same scenario.

I dont think anyone ties such an intricate knot to be cool - They tie them because it works
I run the double uni knot for all my bream fishing and always run locked up drags and never have a problem with the knot breaking...I get smoked before the knot fails...Though when fishing for bigger game when jigging and the like, the double uni does my head in as it catches on the guides all the time which requires smaller length leaders.
Looking forward to tying the FG in bigger line classes, but think I'll just stick with the double uni when it comes to bream fishing.

Great thread fellas!
