Stradic FJ vs Sustain FG

Hey all,

I'm looking at getting a 1000 sized Shimano for estuary spin duties - is there much difference between these two reels? Is the Sustain worth the extra $100? I want a nice, decent reel - doesn't need to be the best but want something smooth with smooth drag also. Does X Ship make a big difference to cranking power?

Cheers
Chris

The Stradics are a great reel, landed my 1.88kg bream on my original FH Stradic the drag was super smooth.

I have a FJ as well the XShip is great makes everything that bit smoother when reeling in.

Personally I would (and did) put the extra $100 into the rod.

You will be getting better quality in the Sustain so the money will be well spent. Personally I can't fault my Stradics so I just keep buying more. Currently I have 5.

Hey mate, essentially it is only a few things between these reels, they are the same body, I'm sure you've Picked up on the grip and bail arm design differences.
The sustain is worth extra due to the extra bearing (2 vs1) in the grip handle and the spool/ drag set- The sustain has another extra bearing on the shaft where the spool sits and the washers and clicker setup is from the Stella fe!
I have a Stradic fj 4000 and the clicker/spring on the drag is not as good, although ok.

If you like the ergos of the Stradic but want the sustains quality the biomaster fb shares all fg componentry, with slower ratio, bit more $ due to the spare spool though,

I use Stella fe 1000,2500, sustain fg 2500 and bio fb 1000 as my estuary reels.
Theyre all great with subtle differences, buy the best you can afford youll be happy but i reckon the sustain,
cheers

I know the knobs are different. To be honest, i'm not a huge fan of EVA knobs on reels - it does a good job of absorbing fish slime, s factor, gulp juice and whatever else is on your fingers when fishing.

What's the difference between the bail arm designs?

the bail setups are different at the pivot points on the opposite side to the line roller, the stradic has the arm inside the rotor and the sustain outside.

probably only cosmetic and both designs have been around in shimano reels for years, and ive never heard it explained why.

google some pics to compare mate! cheers

I have both in 5000 size . Both are very smooth but the Sustain seems to turn more freely if that makes any sense. I only just got the Stradic and have not used it yet. I'm on my third Stradic and this one feels the best.
The Sustain definately looks sexier.

I can't fault either of my FJ stradics! They are proven workhorses! I still want a fg sustain though, and a Stella...

I have a sustain 1000FD. This reel has had a long, hard life.
It gets a home done service once a year and it is still going strong.
Just as good as the day it came out of the box.
Extra 100 bucks? worth every cent.

thanks for all the replies.
The 1000 Sustain has one less bearing than the other sized Sustains - does anyone know where it is missing this bearing in comparison to the others?

Does the sustain sound the same as stella fe drag though?

Same reels, same bodies and same internals bar the ratio's.

Same handles bar the knob and bearings in them.

Same drag system washer wise.

I have 3 FJ's a 1000, 2500 and 5000, all have had the bearings changed and upgraded in some fashion one part or another. So another bearing in the rear worm drive and another in the worm drive pawl. And another two bearings in the handle knobs. All have Carbon & polished drags and all I would say the 1000FJ is are perfect for all light situations as I run 2lb on it, the 2500FJ and the 5000FJ are a lot bigger in comparison. I wish Shimano brought out a 1500 or 2000 size, the 2500Fj is what I personally consider a heavy duty reel - well mine feels as such and its married up to the 3-7kg Patriarch XTR and the 5000FJ onto the Trion Pelagic Specialist.

The 5000FG Sustain I have has had the same treatments and married up to the 902 SSV V2 Shore Casting rod - both reels are exactly the same in smoothness and function.

Clicker noise is different for sure as the Sustain runs the same clicker / spool support system as the Stella FE and some others, the Stradic FJ series runs the simple yet trustworthy support system and sounds a little agricultural in comparison however more distinct and trustworthy, the FJ system is without the bearing or the minute grub screw found in the FG which can be a real pain in the ass with some being locked in with locktite from factory or corrosion?... Also some people suffer corrosion in the spool support bearing which can become costly to replace if / when the time comes to do so.

Either way for the Sustain to cost that much more than the Stradic for only two more bearings and a lick of black paint is beyond me...

Stradic is a honest reel by all accounts and for what they're going for is a steal!

Up to you but I know where I would be putting my folding stuff - on the FJ.

I went to buy a 5000 Sustain and came home with a 5000 Stradic with the difference spent on lures. The sustain is way cooler looking but is too close internally to a Stradic to justify the pricing difference. I only own a few spinning reels and try to buy them with absolute objectivity as opposed to baitcasters where I just keep buying them, often while drunk on a Friday or Saturday night online....

Go the Stradic and buy lures, lots of lures....
