10 years overhaul

Decided to do a full teardown and cleaned out black glob of grease and oil that was in there after 10 years in the other Twinpower 2500:

Shimmed the drive gear after cleaning and lightly greasing the reel:

She's good to go for a while.

Drag stack after 10 years of good fish:

Great review thanks for going to the trouble. I bought the same reel a couple of months back and the only problem i found is a fair bit of play in the handle but that is in comparison to the Certates i normally use, this is the only Shimano mid range reel i have used for a number of years and overall iam pleased with the way it has performed.
Cheers

The larger reels might come with different washers ?

How much play ? Mine has next to none. The certates are and awesome reel. I have 3. But for the price the FKs can't be beaten.

Great review. Spot on! Mirrors my 3 months experience exactly. Fantastic tight gearing, shitty disintegrated felt drag washers.

According to the schematics it is. I wonder why 1 of the washer has a different part number?

The one against the spool is a different dimension I think.
If they are the same part numbers then the sustain, rarenium, Stella FE have the same washers, are these reels having the same issues as the FK Stradic with the drag wearing away under heavy load?

Yes drag washers from Stella FD and FE and Sustain will fit. No they do not wear down from use. I suspect the Stradic FK uses a different felt material that is thinner.

Same part number though, I would have thought it would be the same.

Yeah same part number since the Stella FB series and also the same part number in the Sustain and Ci4+ Stradic.

So we have two possible explanations:

1. Shimano trying out new felt materials.
2. Same felt materials but without the ball bearing in the spool and the ball bearing on the shaft to support the drag under heavy load, the felt materials are easily shredded.

The two 2005 Twinpower I have above uses the same part number. They have seen ten years of service and ten time the fish on the Stradic FK. The Stradic FK felt washers disintegrated after two hours of 5-6 lbs drag. The Twinpower felt washers are fine after at least 30 hours of drag at 5-6 lbs.

So if the material is the same, then the ball bearings supported drag system in the Stellas, Twinpowers, and newer Sustain makes a world of difference.

Google Stradic Ci4+ and Stradic FJ felt washers. They use the same part number but they lack the two ball bearings supported drag system. I see the same type of failure when the drags are pushed beyond the 3-4 lbs range in the Stradic series and the FK is no exception and the review above is the THIRD confirmed shredded felt drag washers.

Id also like to confirm shredded washers on 3000.

5000 comes with carbon washers as standard but drag performance can be a bit uneven while still smooth which cleaning didn't help with. I wish they had felt in the five to be honest.

$180 plus a bit extra for replacement drag washers?

I hope this threads on the money as i just bought one!!!

In all seriousness, i love the Stradics, i have CI4's, CI4+'s, Rareniums, FI's, FJ's and now an FK. All have proven themselves constantly, under harsh offshore kayak conditions, and continue to kick on.

Can anyone recommend a good shop for picking up new carbon drag washes for these?
