A Q for the Slug Chucka's

Just got a batch of $1 slugs off ebay and the hooks feel a bit week so they will be replaced.

But I'm wondering what size to replace them with if I want to release fish - do I go singles or over sized trebs that are less likely to be swallowed by 1kg salmon and tailor.

I've never used singles on metal slugs so I'm not sure of the hook up rate

I wonder if adding a swivel between the hook and the lures would reduce dropping fish

Singles for sure. No drop in hook up ratio, less thrown hooks and better for the fish.
If you really want to reduce dropped fish using assist hooks is meant to be even better but I haven't felt the need for it.

Possibly worth upgrading split rings too, have got some pretty sus rings on cheap slugs in the past.

Thanks Mazman - I'll give the split rings a yank with the scales - I dont think I'll muck around with assists either - Sounds like singles are the go.

Whoops I forgot to ask - what size and style singles would you use on a 7cm slug if you were targeting 1kg fish

Can it be done with a standard fish hook or do you need this style

Rod just recommended these for 1-2kg salmon.

I like the decoy jigging singles, gamakatsu inline singles and for a cheaper option mustad kaijus. For that size a 1/0 or a 2/0

Yeah I've got a pack of decoy plugging singles on the way - I'll put them through their paces soon

Oh yeah and last question - do you rig them hook point facing up or down. ie if you had a choice would you prefer hooking them in the top jaw or lower jaw

Easier to handle, 2 less points to get into fingers
Less weed, snagging up etc
Don't seem to reduce hook up rate
Less fish throwing the hooks

This has been by far my most successful hook set up on metals around 70mm for casting from the beaches.
I tie the assist dropper myself and the hooks are 4/0 mustad hoodlums. I use a pair of pliers to take the kirb out of the hook.

Since switching over to this instead of just 1 single my landing rate on salmon has more than doubled and still yet to be bitten off by a tailor.

Outstanding!

I'm loving the thought thats gone into that set up - I'm definitely adding a swivel to my lures - cuts down on line twist and saves leader from sharp spilt rings - bewdiful

What lb and type of line do you use to tie the assists? And how do you shrink the shrink tubing without over heating the assist cord or is that not really an issue?
