Two memes for this post - bit undoubtedly the mods would not be kind to it and I'd be booted for a field goal...

popcorn_seinfeld.jpg

Having read bits and pieces and read that I'm a fanboy and support shimano and their technologies... ahh nah.

How many MM geard reels do i own = 0

The photo i put up was of the oscillation drive gears being MM toothed. I dont believe that they'll ever go to a MM main and pinion in spin reels similar finely cut like in the old Abu Cardinal reels.

And you can actively find me stating on quiet a few accounts that the Stella FI and SW have MM oscillator drive gears - some which have failed and I've replaced already.

Just bought a G, E Curado and 100 MG Core so my enthusiasm to the new dark arts of shimano is virtually zero. I dig shimano because dollar for dollar they work and last for me longer than anything else ive bought in the past.

When it comes to Daiwa hmm you may want to do some reading on their technologies and see how they ethically portray their stuff and how they warrant it in real time - you want planned obsolescence go that way.

Yeh i spin tools and service so whats your dig, I'm no engineer not good for the maths. But who've you referenced in your quoting about MM gears?

Anyhow I've got a mango to burry my face into on my break at work - all while screeching and running around with my arms flapping and stating I'm a fruitbat to all the customers...

On a side note - I am certainly going to buy the new Bantam casting reel when that is released 👌

I'm somewhat disappointed this spirited debate subsided so quickly.

Any more news on the Stella? Not sure if it's known yet but there will be a brand new Exist coming in 2018 too.

Haha I'll keep the banter going....From what I can read they're just promoting their IOS-01 oil as a lubricant between the main shaft and the rotor nut bearing in order to reduce friction from the longitudinal movement of the shaft.

Doesn't change the fact that the rotor nut bearing has to be present in order to have the "full" floating shaft feature on a spinning reel - in order to reduce the rotational friction between the shaft and inside of the pinion. Something that Shimano only provides on the Stella and the new Exsence LB (the standard Exsence doesn't even have the bearing). Everything below these two reels likely has Shimano's 'poor mans' version with the modified pinion design. (IOS factory's reference to the "half" floating shaft is probably as a comparison to the floating shaft design on baitcasters/overheads - where the spool shaft rotates completely on its bearings, it doesn't have to deal with any longitudinal movement of the main shaft as on spinning reels.)

Shimano's poor mans floating shaft -

Daiwa provide the rotor nut bearing on all their high end reels and quite a few of their mid range reels - even the Caldia has it.

Alan Hawks explanation of the function of the rotor nut bearing in the attached photo.

Sorry to say it but Shimano fanboys are getting gypped out of this basic feature (unless you buy the Stella or Exsence LB) Dropping 650 big ones on a new Vanquish? Too bad!

Shimano won't give you a basic feature that provides smoothness and efficiency when it counts i.e when the reel is under load. A basic feature that would cost them one cheap bearing per reel.... a feature that was invented 20 years ago...

They will give you micro module gears though... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Has anyone tried to install the rotor nut/bearing assembly onto a reel with a dumb nut ?

There's plenty of space between the nut and spool support assembly to allow it, and i imagine the threading on the pinion gear would be pretty standard...

Most spool supports go all the way down to near enough the jesus nut. Have tried putting a stella shaft seal and cap on a few other reels and when oscillation went down it met and bound up.

But otherwise if a brand new nut was machined from scratch and the top of the pinion shaved yes - would have to be alike the Daiwa set up.

But i see no real point in it all - both mechanically or financially.

Yeah, you're right.
Had a look at my Stradic and yeah, the spool support assy is almost right up against the nut plate at the end of the stroke.
Cheers, saves me making that mistake.

Hyper gears and micro mesh gearing...

From the maker's that gave you a boutique bronze alloy that cost the world when it went pear shaped and a similar gear cut to spawn - yes you thought right...

"Hyper + Mesh"

Well good luck to them - just hope they dont stuff the Ryoga with it.
