Yeah I spose it would be hard not to catch Jewies when netting mullet. And I'm sure thats the explanation the pros give - but if you can legally throw the nets around $10,000 of bycatch its not going to discourage these "accidental" hauls

Maybe a change or addition to the rules on a seasonal basis to support the jewies would be beneficial.

Yeah heres a vid of how an Eden Pro uses drone to locate the schools of mullet.

Judging by the footage - it would be quite easy to tell the difference between a 1kg mullet and a 37kg Jewie.

Not being able to sell Jewies when they congregate to breed would be a nice start - not being able to sell Jewies at all would be better

Yeah there was a small glimmer of hope in the Vid where the Old Pro says he will probably be the last generation of netters as its becoming harder and harder to find schools they havent netted - Those drones should speed up the process

Yeah thats not a pretty picture at all - its weird how these loop holes exist.

I was upset enough watching them round up a whole school of mullet - with the new tech - it just doesnt seem fair - what are they doing with those mullet anyway?

From what I've heard this year, the females where getting $4.50+ a kg and the males where getting sold to bait companies,co ops, trap bait.
Another thing that sucks is the blackfish and bream follow close behind only to suffer the same fate as the mulloway... All bycatch.
