help: Olympus TG-2 vs Nikon Coolpix AW110

Hey all,

After some experiences any of you have had with the above cameras.

My tg-810 packed it in yesterday after 2yrs of faithful service and some very rugged trips (I might be abut more careful next time round).

Any points and opinions over the 2x cameras will be great to figure which to go at the end of the day.

Look forward to some advice.

Thanks
Dan

my thoughts

i went with the AW100. AFter Mick'sGoneFishing did a review,

I mostly use the gopro, because its always out on the deck / windscreen, and i just hod the fish still in the video...

Cant beat the AW100 if your just after stills.

Thanks vespadito, I have read that review.

I'm really just after stills as I have a contour for video.

I see the Olympus TG-2 has ultra quick shitter speed and focus vs the AW110/100, that being said the Nikon is much better priced. Seems marginal at this stage.

I have the Olympus TG 2 and can highly recommend it. It takes fantastic photos even in low light and it is very simple to use, but has the ability for you be more precise with settings.

Here are a few recent photos ive taken with it.

good thread.
I've wondered the same thing.

Does anyone know whether or not they are acceptable for print media though? Would save me taking the DSLR on the hairy missions.

starting to form a verdict aftera test run...

Had a play with both models in store. Liking the Olympus to be honest.

The speed of turning the unit on and being able to take a photo is nuts. The aperture range is impressive for a point and shoot camera, and the speed is good too. I also noted the high speed frame capture function and tested it on both models. Whilst the Nikon is good, the Olympus just seemed to do everything just that bit better.

Still a tough choice but giving the edge to the tg-2. I don't think these will ever replace a SLR, but keeping in mind it's about having a camera on you during the hairy periods (where you wouldn't risk an expensive bulky unit) that sometimes allows you to catch some brilliant moments; I think either of these cameras will do a fine job of it.

Will report as I finally get the camera etc, pls keep the thoughts and points coming guys.

I have the Nikon AW100 after my earlier model Olympus (tough 1050??? can't remember the model) leaked for the 2nd time - lasted about 3 yrs with not a lot of hard work. First time it leaked was just under 12 months old and they fixed it grudgingly under warranty (took their time though). Second time was maybe 2 years later (and very few underwater shots) on a trip to Vanuatu - It took one photo underwater and shat itself again (maybe you description of the Olympus shutter is accurate after all).

Maybe I just got a dud - but don't think I'll buy an Olympus again. Once bitten twice shy.

The Nikon has been really good. Taken it snorkelling in Vanuatu and again in Hawaii.

As an aside I've played with a mates Lumix waterproof/shock proof camera and its really good to. I would have bought one of those but the range in Vanuatu when I needed to replace the Olympus was a whole 1 waterproof camera.

You can not go wrong with an Olympus TG...They produce some stunning photos and can also take a bit of a beating. Top cameras for sure.

Made the decision.... Olympus TG2

Thanks for all your help guys.

Well glad to say I ended up with a TG 2. So far, so good. Very nice bit of kit, that even a lay man like myself can shoot. Feel free to ask me any of my experiences if you're in the market for one of these fellas.

Finally here's a few samples (un-doctored):

Anyone know if either the Olympus or Nikon shoot print media quality images?

Don't different publications have different requirements?

I'm pretty sure they would be fine for a newprint publication but last time I looked (which was a longtime ago) flylife wanted RAW images. Some of the other publications would have different requirements again. The AW100 doesn't do RAW. Not sure about the AW110.
A mate who does/did some media work bought a Panasonic Lumix a few years back. From memory it was because it did RAW.

I think you would be better asking the publications you are thinking of if they have any specific requirements.

Most just tell you DSLR quality.
I haven't had any request for RAW images as yet, but I do shoot in RAW at times and then edit the pictures at home before submission.

What do they mean by that - Pixel count????
The JPG you get out of a 12MP point and shoot is pretty much the same as a JPG you get out of a 12MP DSLR. Given decent conditions, you'll only pick the difference looking at the EXIF data.
The DSLR will likely be better at lower light due to the bigger sensor and more flexibility in lens options. But that won't show up in a JPG.

Its quite possible to take a terrible photo with a DSLR - just ask me I'll show you how.
