I can remember winding on a middle range 4 strand braid (I won't mention the brand) through my fingers and the amount of coating that came off was ridiculous. I had to stop winding every 30 metres or so and pick this great glob off junk off the line that had already semi fused.

Geez - that amount of glob does sound excessive.

Yeah when it comes to mono and fc - I always have the spool I'm loading up from, flat on the ground and flip it if I notice twist after 20 winds.

My concerns with twist stem back to the mono days but I'd agree they havent been an issue with braid

I dont touch the braid at all when winding it on with tension. I use the pen between the toes method.

I've been loading spin reels with mono and FC for a hell of a lot of years with just a screwdriver or something through the spool and can't recall any line twist problems.

I must admit most times its on bait fishing reels and there's always a swivel in the rig somewhere.

Yeah right - I've always done it with the spool flat on the ground after being told it is the correct way - but I never thought to check it.

You can definitely introduce alot of twist, if the spool is the wrong way up, when spooling with my method and using mono - flipping the spool over fixes it


To test for twist mid spooling - you just introduce some slack to the line and if it ties itself up in knots - you know you've been doing it wrong

Yeah sometimes the simplest way is the best.

I've just avoided that method because I thought it added twist - (I'm beginning to think that fear might be unfounded)

Alot of my spooling techniques and theories have there origins in the 80's and were before braid - I might need to update my thinking and do some tests

I recall the Shimano paperwork that comes with their reels quotes you're way as the correct way to spool up. But us blokes never read the instructions, do we!

Yeah that makes sense - all my early reels were shimano's

It might add twist. Not enough that ive ever noticed it though.

I guess it adds 1 full twist for every revolution of the bail roller, but that would also remove itself during a cast.
Line twist on the reel or in the water, whatever suits the owner, but nothing to worry about IMO.
