Reels that are way better than their retail price suggests
I was Just reading a reply by Slazmo about an ugly little reel he likes and it occurred to me that there are probably heaps of reels that fit into that category.
Ugly but underpriced Not made by Daiwa or Shimano but still good Heaps of Features with out the price tag etc. What are some of the hidden gems? |

Case in point.
Caenan 9 bearings of sloppiness and workhorse. Threw Tatula knobs on and I'm away Another old fav was the Saros F spinning reel - bombproof.

Years ago I picked up a Pflueger Supreme for around $150. It was never serviced in the 5 years I owned it, and the only issue it ever had was the spring coming off the drag clicker which Pflueger addressed by sending me an entire new spool at no cost. It wasn't what I'd call a refined piece of machinery by any means, but it was a magnesium bodied reel with 10 bearings, was super smooth and light to wind with an adequate drag and on top of that weighed in at only 180g. For a light estuary reel I think it was worth every penny.

You talking about the Mg body and titanium shaffed Supreme? Always had a wish for one of them, Anaconda had them for silly runout money and i missed out on the last two by 30 mins.

Yup! That's the one. They could be found on sale for spare change as they were superseded.

I bought one of these in 2010 - I was told it would dissolve if exposed to salt air - so far its survived a permanent maker paint job and countless exposures to the salty stuff.

But I should be clear - it hasnt been used as a lure casting reel much - mainly bait - so its done bugger all casting and retrieving when compared to a reel used for lures that catches big fish

Because Australia has had certain brands drummed into their heads since Rex Hunt started - I'm sure alot of other brands dont even get picked up here. So there has to be some rugged workhorses out there I've never heard of - I've seen Videos of guys snorkel fishing in the USA for striped bass - I'll see if I can find a vid to see what they use I cant find it right now but alot of these striped bass fishermen dont mind getting their reels wet Last edited by yellow door 1; 18-01-2018 at 05:40 AM. |

We used to have a superstition that the colour orange was bad luck - based on some Ladies not waving to a mate on the river one day - he couldnt work out why - coz the ladies on that river were usually very friendly - so we decided it had to be the orange t-shirt he was wearing - from them on - Orange = Bad Luck |

Not sure how much was lost in the great BM site meltdown but some of the old old old posts were of reels and rods back when bream lureing was in its infancy...
Great read of some of the technologies back then, which we call pretty low these days - but was at its epitome back early 2000's.
