Purchase one of the below and leave the line lay to the reel assuming it is shimmed correctly.
This gadget lets you respool line off under your pre-set tension and winds line off a reel quickly as it is geared for the job. There are a few different types available but this is simple and durable (I have had mine 7 or 8 years) servicing over 20 reels so it gets used pretty often.

Those are a clever bit of kit - I just googled them and I like the idea of infinite drag adjustment

That looks like the upmarket one from what I have, it does look impressive probably a heap more expensive though.
The cleaver bit about these dedicated re-spoolers is that you have total control and it is a piece of cake to do it quickly on your own, you do not have to ask the wife for help if you get my drift

I've always done it myself, I'm in the camp that believes using the reel and it's own line lay preference will help out in the long run taper wise and quantity. I've shimmed some of my reels and after a few long casts or long runs the line is going to go back on the way the reel is set up anyway.
I used to spool up with the reel alone but now I do it through all or most of the guides on a rod and have the taper loaded up. Gives more consistency I feel.

Now if only I could get my bloody assistant (Mrs) to apply perfect consistent pressure the system would be perfect

You can borrow mine. She must be the model up from yours. Voice activated tension control. Perfect results every time!

Thanks for the replies all.

I had them spooled in the shop when I first bought them. This is my first time re-spooling my higher end gear. I think I was over thinking it a bit.

I think I will spool them myself like I did in the past.

I've spooled up heaps of reels at work for customers, on everything from $50 reels to $400 reels, and no one (to my knowledge) has ever come back complaining of uneven line lay after a bit of use. With overhead reels they have to be left on the rod to spool them up though, and I've noticed if you spool up baitcast/overhead reels under too much tension, you'll get an angled, uneven line lay.

I havent used one - but I've never found line twist to be an issue with braid.

Huge issue with monofilament line but not with braid.

Spooling bait casters is a piece of piss as no twist is added if you run a pencil through the middle of the spool.

But when I'm putting braid on to a "Egg Beater" reel - I just put the spool in a cylindrical vessel full of water. And do about 20 revolutions of the reel handle.

Then put some slack in the braid to see if it twists up. If it doesnt twist I keep spooling

But if it does twist - I just turn the spool over like flipping a pancake - then the twist goes away.

I add tension by running the line between my fingers - as the line is wet, it doesnt heat up like dry line does.

If I have to put a heap of line on the reel - I'll use wet polar fleece gloves to add tension to my line to save my fingers

I used to do the same thing with mono and it worked back then aswell
