unfortunately no - we were more concerned about poisonous fumes and possible explosions at the time! just imagine 2 guys with jumpers over mouths, safety glasses and welding gloves pouring molten lead from a milo tin into a plaster mould in a 2l coke bottle with smoke going everywhere....a classic moment in backyard manufacturing!!

we thought for sure it was going to just be a blob of crud but it worked out unreal - we did panic and stop the pour at one stage which resulted in that big crack towards the back of the head....amateur mistake.

hopefully that's the first and last time I ever smear vaseline on a carp!! it was all worth it (assuming we don't have lead poisoning), our little comp amongst a dozen or so blokes has been going for 7-8 years now and that trophy is highly sort after for bragging rights every year

Yeah that carp looks good - backyard alchemy is not for the faint hearted We've done something similar making plaster of paris molds of down rigger bombs - having that much molten lead in your hands can make them shake a little

Even the little jobs require full concentration

If you bought a whole heap of cheap mullet floats and found out they werent quite right for the way you fish - no drama - just cut up some safety pins and lash them on

Or if you get to your spot and you've forgotten the floats at home - a drinking straw - pliers and a lighter will get you back into the fish.

What's on the back? Possibly stupid question but how do you stop the nut on the back (I assume) from unthreading when you spin the bolt head?

I've had problems with crab traps in the past - the big crabs tear through the mesh on those little mesh box traps and my coffee tin creations werent particularly successful

So this is my Latest prototype - Double gutter guard funnel/PVC crab trap. Its dark inside and the scent will predominantly leak out at the entrances.

I'm sure alot of rod leash aficionados are familiar with the Whipper snipper cord leash. But this guy adds an innovative twist at the end

all this talk of gutter guard reminded me that I once made a berley pot out of the galv version - flattened couple of star sinkers with mallet for weight at bottom:

Then all you need is a meat grinder to mince up any old bait, squid wings/guts, add a bit of tuna oil and pellets then mould into cricket size balls, put into baggies and freeze - when you go fishing just grab a few balls and chuck into berley pot.

Jeez that brings back memories. Not good ones I bought a second hand blunt grinder from the market and ran 100 old pippies through one arvo and swore I'd never use a grinder again

We also used to have a big onion bag full of frames collected from the local market attached to the anchor chain when fishing westernport. It sounds like a great idea until you think about it. Gave up on that idea pretty quick for a couple of reasons.

Firstly - We watched what happens when a leviathan grabs the bag and starts yanking on it

And secondly - the onion bag was a great way to find lost hooks on the bottom of the more popular spots. So next time you drop anchor and the chain is running through your mates hands - the empty onion bag slides through and an old snapper rig with a 4/0 hook thats caught in the bag also slides through.

Your mate drops instantly onto his chest with the weight of the anchor dragging his arm into the water. The hook that was initially lodged in the meaty part of his palm, ploughs a trench down his hand and pops out of his finger tip.

You put that down to a freak accident and continue with the onion bag. Then a couple of week later it happens again to a different mate. Only this time the hook doesnt pull through. It stays lodged in his palm and he has to pull the anchor chain back in before he can yank it out with pliers.

Only then was the onion bag experiment deemed unsafe

We went with a honey bucket drilled full of holes after that
