What size reel?

I have just seen DohDohDoh are having a sale on and a mate is going up and might be able to stop in for me. The special is on a shimano sienna for $50 but it only comes in either a 1500 or 2500 so what would you choose? I have until Friday to decide?

Mate if your from far north, i would get the 2500, more drag etc... Just incase when your breaming up there and you hook something big, it has more chance than the 1500

thats just what i would do

thanks

Yeah i have been thinking about and more i think the more the 2500 sounds practical. Don't have a rod that's another save up job but it seems pretty cheap

Hey buddy,

I would choose the 1500, it's a nice size for bream fishing and it will probably match your rod better. I have fished up in Exmouth WA and have caught good size fish on a 1000. My first bream reel was a 2500 and i found it to big. I now have 2 1000 twin powers and i would get anything else now.

Cheers
Tim

Agree with bream_mc when that big fish hits you, its best of to have a strong enough reel to be able to keep him on. hth

Even if a big by-catch hits, a 2500 with more drag isn't going to be much more of an advantage at all if he using light braid with light leader for bream.

Not really, get a alright trevy (60 or so) you would be able to catch it with the right drag on light line unless u're using (1-3lb) or even a small salty barra could come along, I caught 1 on 6lb line before, Im not sure if a 1000-1500 could support any of that, but I wouldn't know I never had a 1000-1500 size reel thats just my opinion.

Fisho.

If you are routinely busting off big surprises when fishing light line then you need to really check your system and technique: you're doing something wrong. Minnow man is spot on: a light leader and line more often than not will get done, but the fun is in testing your luck..... or going prepared.

Even a small salty barra? How 'bout a big one.... trust me, a good 1000-1500 is plenty capable. The big differences in the reels will be more focused on weight, physical size, line capacity and line handling. Also, how well they suit the intended rod.

Personally I think for all-round light tackle spinning the ideal size would be something around the JDM Shimano 2000 size. The newer gen. 1500/2000 Daiwas are also well suited to most rods in the lengths and weights we use.

What??? A 2500 will hold more line, a way bigger advantage than having a 1000/1500 sized reel, my reels are all 2500's and i'd never go back to a 1500 or 2000 that's just me though...

BB, you missed the point completely. Stopping power is useless with fine line and super light leaders (which have become the norm for pressured bream). The added capacity is definitely a plus (if you can let them run), but the size and weight difference jumping from 100/1500 to 2500 is usually a bit much.

the 2500 is not a stronger reel, just bigger, it has the exact same internals the only difference between the 2 is line capacity and if bream are the majority of your catch and your only getting the odd bigger fish then theres no need to worry about line capacity either, when do bream take over 100 yds of braid? if you get spooled well film it, drop a few expletives and laugh about it later. just my 2 cents worth

what gear do you have at the moment? if you don't have a rod and reel of your own the 2500 will give you more options. in the sienna you'll get the same drag (3kg) for both reel sizes, the 2500 will only be marginally heavier 40grams or so.

best idea would be to choose the rod you want and see which reel feels better on it, then make up your mind
