The first thing I do with any new lure is take off the split ring on the towing eye. I find there's no need for it when I use Decoy snaps, as they serve the same purpose. I use the smallest Decoy snaps even though they're a bit fiddley. I also sometimes use the Decoy spiral snaps, as they're very quick and easy to use, but on the negative side, I find they're a bit bulky.
I use Decoy snaps for all my fishing, whether I'm using hardbodies or soft plastics. Because, the snaps are actually taking the place of the original split rings, I feel there's no difference and it allows me to change lures very quickly and easily. I haven't noticed any change to the performance of any lures when they're used with a snap, as the snap allows the lure complete freedom to do its thing. I will admit that I'm prone to change lures far too many times, but I like to give all the favourites a run, particularly if it's a slow day. If I'm having success, I will leave the same lure on. Years ago, I tied all my lures on with a loop knot. This was back in the days before braid was common. Since I've been using braid, I found that constantly tying loop knots in my leader, my leader doesn't last even one session, before it's too short. I'd be lost without snaps. |

Tie direct. For hardz i use Yozuri Hawaiian or Normal speed clips.

For jigheads I go with a uni or blood knot.
With hards I usually tie direct to the split ring but I've been giving these clips a go lately. Can't remember what they're called but they go OK. They are really small and won't upset the balance of your lure. The other thing I do if fishing really light leaders is tie a 8 or 10 turn uni knot but don't close the knot right up. This forms a small loop that is a bit stronger than most loop knots. It will close up if you catch a fish or snag up but you can usually open it up again or re tie it.

I used to use clips mainly for ease of lure changing. Was talked out of it due to possible change in the lure's action but i don't think it makes any difference. In a situation where you are searching for fish or seeing what they are taking I think a clip is the way to go. As others have said though, on the small clips it can be hard to open them.

Are the Decoy 00 smaller than the 0?

No, these are a Mustad clip.
Personally I don't like the look of them as one of the ends is sticking out and it looks assymetrical to me. Not the best thing to have on the end of your leader ![]() http://www.bigtentackle.com/bt/snaphook.htm |

I have fat stubby fingers and I open the Decoy 0 and the 00's fine - sometimes with poppers there is an issue but I use the popper itself to open the snap. The 1 and the one larger than that are simply too big for breaming but excellent opening and closing with my fingers and while using larger lures and slugs...
I had the size 1 or the bigger one of that and it failed on me the other day in the house while I loaded up my Abu on the Ugly stick and left a bloody great mess in the ceiling with 4 huge dents and drag marks from the runners - must have let go at around 11kg's of pressure as it straightened out pretty bad... So far none of the Decoy 0 or 00's have let go while fishing with 6lb higher or lower - cant fault them at all!

Are you really that time poor that you cant just tie a knot to your chosen lure or jig head ?

I wouldn't say its time poor - just a method of cliping lures to the line rather than tying and sniping and tying again which wastes about 10cm of FC every time you switch lures.
Personally I clip rather than tie and yes I have tied for years prior to these decoys. |
