Interesting thread.
I'm love this kind of stuff and I'm from Bridgetown so over heard all the stories plus a few personal experiences. What I've heard about the circus cougars. Yonks back there was a circus traveling around the southwest with two cougars. They where contained in a wood box crate being towed by a truck or horses (I've heard story's about both) and they Gained to much speed and lost control and flipped going down either Bridgetown hill (north of town) or Nannup hill (east of Nannup). Personal experiences: I frequently see a large cat like animal on Scott river road. I've seen this 4-5 times while in the car and mum has seen it from a fairly close distance while going for a jog. This thing is not huge, but it's bigger then a feral cat. It's about the size of a medium/large dog. But what makes me curious about this creature is the way it moves. I've always know wild cats as skittish, secretive animal (I do abit of hunting) But this thing isn't scared at all. This animal lies on the road and gets up and struts off, has a sluggish movement about it and isn't fazed about a car coming towards it. It acts like it is the top of the food chain and it knows it. Another story is from my old geography teacher who is a respectable person. He was out trout fishing one day Around Nannup and spotted a cougar. He explained it as 'a larger black chuck of meat that gently flowed across rocks like water' |

On this rare sighting note, I've heard story's about an old boy who lives out in the bush on the Shannon river (c'mon Dowelly you would of fished it). Apparently he lives out in the bush with no connections to other humans? |

A "cat" chasing a 5 foot kangaroo up a very steep cliff ?....guess again.
This thing was tan and much larger than any feral cat |

Token sceptic here. Please forgive me but that's the conclusion my thoughts lead me. It's not a decision but the natural conclusion I formed after reading through this thread and coming from a scientific background.

one of my good mates grandad had lived in dwellingup for 70 or so years and used to tell us stories of cougars around the area and trees with claw marks up to 3 meters from the base of the trunk were they had been scratching.

I'm a big sceptic too. Firstly, most of the people claiming to have seen cougars in this thread have said they were black...cougars aren't black. Secondly, there have been sightings from all over Australia (in just about every state). What are the odds of cougars escaping captivity and establishing themselves in the wilderness in almost every Australian state? Why is there no record of these escape events? Domestic cats do live in every state and there is a heap of evidence to suggest that ferals are growing to huge sizes. Have a read of this article:
http://scienceblogs.com/tetrapodzool...ral-mega-cats/ One of the feral cats referenced in this article was 1.6m - easily big enough to be mistaken for a cougar or some other species of big cat Last edited by Broomstick; 31-07-2015 at 05:32 AM. |
