Save Money Using Braid Backing

Just started learning how to with baitcasters,is this a good or bad idea.
I'm chasing mulloway in rivers using a 20lb mono/flouro with 40bl braid backing

Top shotting with mono on a bait caster is going to shorten your casting distance - so as long as that isnt an issue - then the method he is describing is good in certain scenarios -

The only major prob I can see is missing hits due to the lack on sensitivity on long lengths of mono and flouro. That may sound crazy on a fish as big as a Jewie - but unless you are doing a constant retrieve or trolling or hopping the lures along the bottom with short puases, sensitivity can be an issue on Jewies.

If you are dead sticking a lure - the mulloway often do an inhaling feeding style - they just rapidly puff out there cheeks to form suction and they inhale the lure - this registers on your line like a little "pluck" as the Jewie isnt moving when he takes the lure - he just hovered over it and sucked it in.

Depending on how far you have cast - this pluck can be missed on stretchy lines or ones with memory and it will give the jewie a chance to spit it out before you can strike.

Also if you are casting cross current - the extra drag from the thicker mono can be a problem - I just run braid with a flouro leader - and the leader is short enough so the joining knot isnt on the spool while casting

Yes some things to consider in what you have said yd1

Ended up sticking to traditional methods, good braid with rod length leader at the end
